Modernism Outside Western Culture

Say “modernism” and many people think of Picasso, Pollock or Dali. But the artistic movement, which celebrated freedom of expression, abstraction, experimentation and occasional social and political messaging, was global in nature and influence. An upcoming exhibition at the Rollins Museum of Art, which runs between September 17 and December 31, brings a slice of non-Western modernism to Central Florida. Modernisms: Iranian, Turkish and Indian Art, 1960s–1970s, features selected works from the Abby Weed Grey Collection of Modern Asian and Middle Eastern Art. The collection, housed at New York University’s Grey Art Gallery, is the largest assemblage of modern Indian art at an American university museum.
