Though a lot of New Yorkers don’t know it, New York University owns a treasure trove of art. In 1973, the school’s collection became known as the Grey Art Gallery, and in 2023 it was renamed the Grey Art Museum. There are, of course, masterpieces by iconic Downtown artists—think Peter Hujar and Fred McDarrah—but the collection also holds 1,000 works of modern Indian, Iranian, and Turkish art, which were donated by Abby Weed Gray in 1975. Up until last year, the gallery was tucked away in the Silver Center on Washington Square. Now it is getting its own space at 18 Cooper Square.
