Sadr, Behjat

Abstract IV, 1961

Image for Abstract IV, 1961

In Abstract IV, seen here, and Abstract III (G1975.27), Sadr covered the paper in thick brushstrokes of black paint and then scraped it away with her palette knife, shaping forms and textures that crisscross the surface vertically and horizontally. Splatters of red paint underscore the spontaneity of her technique, which, while appearing visually simple, emanated from the artist’s technical innovations. Although Sadr experimented with various painting styles, she is best known for her graphic abstractions, which range from fluid to geometric.
