Tanavoli, Parviz
Sculptures of Persepolis #1, 1961
This work’s title refers to the ancient ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire (c. 550–330 BCE), which is located northeast of the city of Shiraz in the Fars Province in Iran. A partially ruined monumental complex of royal palaces and other buildings, Persepolis was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Here Tanavoli plays on the magnificent, highly stylized bas-reliefs adorning its walls, which represent men and beasts in procession.
