A Victorian Halloween Magic-Lantern Show

In conjunction with the exhibition Moving Pictures: American Art and Early Film, 1880–1910

Travel back in time with The American Magic Lantern Theater, and experience the boisterous fun of an 1890s magic-lantern show—the kind of show that led to moving pictures. Participate in ghostly animated stories, including Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven,” and spooky songs—all dramatized on a full-sized screen by a live showman and singer/pianist, with help from the audience. Followed by a conversation between Terry Borton, Director, National Magic Lantern Theater, Tom Drysdale, Associate Professor, Departments of Photography and Imaging, and Undergraduate Film and Television, and other speakers.

Co-sponsored by NYU’s Departments of Photography and Imaging, Undergraduate Film, and Television, and Cinema Studies (all TSOA), and Grey Art Gallery.
