(Event in Two Parts)
Endurance Protocols: Tidal Warning
NYU Center for the Humanities
Hosted by our friends at NYU’s Center for the Humanities, this event in two parts invites you to join artist Sarah Cameron Sunde for a 12-hour silent writing cycle, followed by an evening talk on climate performance.
Part I
Write like the Tide!
We invite you to share the intriguing lessons and unexpected inspirations that arise when the tide becomes your teacher.
As she has already done on the shores of all the world’s oceans through her project 36.5 / A Durational Performance with the Sea, Sarah Cameron Sunde will devote a full tidal cycle––about 12 hours––to learning from her collaborator, the sea. This time, silent standing will be replaced with silent writing, anchoring a space for contemplation and creation. Aligning with the tidal cycle from 6:14am to 5:52pm, Sarah invites you to join her to work on your own projects or respond to our prompts.
Visitors are welcome to come and go at any time between 6:14am and 5:52pm, and stay for as long as they wish.
Part II
At 6pm, Una Chaudhuri will host a celebration and reflection on the “Endurance Protocols” that characterize climate-informed performance practice today. She will be joined in conversation by Jillian Porter, Associate Professor in Russian and Slavic Studies and Comparative Literature and faculty adviser to the Environmental Humanities Minor in Environmental Studies.
Accompanying Installation
The program will also include an accompanying installation of video and photographic work from the nine performances of 36.5 / A Durational Performance with the Sea, which took place around the world between 2013 and 2022.
Please register to attend this event.
Co-sponsored by the Grey Art Museum, NYU.
