June Leaf on Screen
Program 2: June Leaf’s Canadian Home

In conjunction with the exhibition June Leaf: Shooting from the Heart
September 9–December 13, 2025

The Grey and Anthology Film Archives present three programs of films and videos that document June Leaf’s life and work, and attempt to capture her profoundly creative, exploratory, and uncompromising spirit.

PROGRAM 2:

ANOTHER LIGHT ON THE ROAD: ROBERT FRANK & JUNE LEAF’S CANADIAN HOME
by Kathryn Whalen and John Parlante
2024, ca. 78 min, DCP

In a new documentary, filmmakers Kathryn Whalen (NYU Tisch ’15) and John Parlante create a portrait of both June Leaf and the hardscrabble seaside farmhouse and studio she shared for 50 years with her husband, Robert Frank, in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. ANOTHER LIGHT ON THE ROAD stands as a testament not only to the artist couple’s powerfully intimate and creative relationship but also to their enduring ties to the Mabou community of Cape Breton. Not long before her death, Leaf watched a cut of the film and shared her satisfaction with Whalen and Parlante, confiding, “You must be very happy to have made this film. I am happy to have this.”
