Karel Teige and the Architectural Avant-Garde
Tuesday, May 1, 6 pm
Main Building, Room 300, New York University (enter at 32 Waverly Place)
Lecture by Dr. Rostislav Svácha, Researcher at the Institute of Art at the Academy of Science, Prague, and coeditor of Karel Teige/1900-1951: L’Enfant Terrible of the Czech Modernist Avant-Garde. Introduced by Jean-Louis Cohen, Sheldon H. Solow Professor in the History of Architecture, Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. Dr. Svacha will explore Teige’s highly influential integration of two seemingly contradictory approaches to architectural theory: Poetist appreciation for the beauties of the modern metropolis—inspired by the writings of Charles Baudelaire and Guillaume Apollinaire—and Scientific Functionalism in the Marxist-Internationalist vein.
Sponsored by the Trust for Mutual Understanding and presented with the assistance of the Czech Center New York
