Open-Ended Ab Ex: Esteban Vicente Within the New York School, A Conversation with His Friends and Students

In conjunction with the exhibition Concrete Improvisations: Collages and Sculpture by Esteban Vicente

Vicente’s involvement in first-generation Abstract Expressionism was a critical factor in the ongoing dialogues about media and subject matter in the 1940s through 1990s. In this panel discussion, Susan Crile, Elizabeth Frank, Dorothea Rockburne, and Irving Sandler—all of whom knew Vicente personally as an artist and teacher—will talk about his legacy, examining the continuing importance of his contribution to abstract visual languages. Moderated by Edward J. Sullivan, Professor of Fine Arts, NYU Institute of Fine Arts and Department of Art History.

Co-sponsored by NYU’s Department of Art and Art Professions, Department of Art History, Institute of Fine Arts, and Grey Art Gallery.
