Moderated by Betsy Rogers, Director of the Garden History Program at the Bard Graduate Center.
The panelists will examine the tradition of British landscape gardening with reference to the theoretical and practical roles of works on paper, including watercolor “flip-books,” working plans, topographical studies, and the kinds of Grand Tour scenes and Romantic picturesque views included in Pastoral to Postindustrial. The influence of the work of artists such as J. M.W. Turner and amateur designers such as William Beckford as well as the impact of encroaching industrialization and urbanization on perspectives of the natural and manmade environment will be explored.
