Posters on Principle

In conjunction with the exhibition Kunstlerplakate: Artists’ Posters from East Germany

From the late 19th century through today, artists have found in the poster format a rich medium for experimentation. Typically created with a specific purpose in mind—announcing an exhibition, promoting a cause—posters are eye-catching, informative, and easy to reproduce and distribute. Kim Conaty, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Prints and Illustrated Books, Museum of Modern Art, will trace a brief history of artists’ posters, situating East German Künstlerplakate within it and demonstrating how posters enabled artists to explore both tradition and transgression under the Communist regime.

Organized by NYU’s Grey Art Gallery and co-sponsored by the Department of Art History and M.A. Program in Visual Arts Administration, Department of Art and Art Professions, Steinhardt School.
