Directed by Wong Kar-Wai. Starring Maggie Cheung, Tony Leung. In Cantonese; English subtitles. 98 minutes. In the Mood for Love concerns a couple married to other people who rent rooms in neighboring apartments and who eventually discover that their spouses are having affairs with each other. Their relationship remains platonic, but “the lack of sexual fireworks within the diegesis finds its compensations in the film’s lush, highly mannered style…. Secrets seem to be hidden behind the surface façade of closed doorways and oblique mirrors.”
From series Films @ The Parrish: Damaged Romanticism. One of four films reflecting the clash between optimism and despair, selected by co-curator Colin Gardner, Professor of Critical Theory and Integrative Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara. Quotations below derive from his exhibition catalogue essay “From Her(e) to Eternity: Time, Memory, and Immanence in the ‘Postmodern’ Romance.”
