Modernisms Now: Contemporary Responses to Iranian, Turkish, and Indian Art from NYU’s Abby Weed Grey Collection

Longform Content

Organized by Grey Art Museum, NYU

In 2027 the Grey Art Museum will present Modernisms Now: Contemporary Responses to Iranian, Turkish, and Indian Art from NYU’s Abby Weed Grey Collection. Six contemporary artists will respond to this founding collection, pairing their own work with historic objects acquired by the museum’s inaugural patron between 1960 and 1975. Inspired by Abby Weed Grey’s intrepid trips to Iran, Turkey, and India as well as her visionary interest in cross-cultural exchange, the exhibition asks how art and ideas travel between cultures, and what we can learn when artists grapple with the past to better understand the present.

Featured contemporary artists are Afruz Amighi, Rina Banerjee, Ali Banisadr, Peter Hristoff, Hayal Pozanti, and Sreshta Rit Premnath. Featured collection artists include Mustafa Aslier, Prabhakar Barwe, and Behjat Sadr, among others.

The exhibition will be on view from February 26 through July 3, 2027, with an opening reception on February 25, from 6 to 8 pm.
