NYU’s Grey Art Museum celebrates the 25th anniversary of a unique grant created to advance the careers of women artists
In her 1929 essay “A Room of One’s Own,” Virginia Woolf wrote: Indeed, I would venture to guess that Anon, who wrote so many poems without signing them, was often a woman. While this line laments the status of women in the literary world, the same could be said of their place in visual art history. Decades later, Susan Unterberg (STEINHARDT ’85) drew inspiration from this prose when she created the Anonymous Was a Woman Award.
