Chronological Exhibition List

Longform Content

This list comprises the exhibitions on view at or organized by the Grey Art Museum at New York University from its opening in 1975—as the Grey Art Gallery and Study Center—through today. This information will be updated as new details emerge. Please email greyartmuseum@nyu.edu with any questions.

Notes:

The dates listed are the dates the exhibition was open to the public and do not take the date(s) of the opening reception(s) into account.

A few location descriptors are seen throughout this list: Back Gallery, Small Gallery, Lower Level Gallery, Windows, and Entrance Hall Gallery. The terms Back Gallery, Small Gallery, and Lower Level Gallery describe different zones of the museum that have existed throughout various renovations made to the building that housed the Grey from 1975 until 2024. At the time of this page’s first publication (May 2020), the Grey Art Gallery’s exhibition space comprised the main gallery on the ground floor and the Lower Level Gallery on the basement level. The term Windows refers to an exhibition space that existed in the windows on 100 Washington Square East between Washington Place and Waverly Place; the practice of installing art in these windows was discontinued in 1997. In 2024 the Grey Art Gallery was renamed the Grey Art Museum and moved from 100 Washington Square East to 18 Cooper Square. The term Entrance Hall Gallery denotes an exhibition space at the Cooper Square museum.
