Rights & Reproductions

Longform Content

The Grey Art Museum at NYU provides low-resolution images of works in the New York University Art Collection on the museum's website for purposes of fair use under U.S. copyright law, including education, research, and private study.

The museum does not own or hold the copyright to the majority of the works in the New York University Art Collection. It is the responsibility of the user to obtain any and all permissions from third-party rights holders or their representatives before using images for purposes beyond fair use. To request high-resolution images, images not available on this website, or images for artworks under copyright restrictions, please follow the procedure listed below.

If you are a rights holder and are concerned that you have found material on this website for which you have not granted permission (or is not covered by a copyright exception under U.S. copyright laws), you may request the removal of the material from our site by submitting a notice to greyartmuseum@nyu.edu.

Reproduction Requests

Once you have determined copyright status, and/or secured permission to reproduce the work from the administrator of the work’s copyright, contact the Grey Art Museum with the following information:

1. Your name and/or institution’s name

2. The artist, title, and/or accession number of the work requested

3. The required image format (digital preferred, transparency, or slide)

4. Your deadline

5. Publication information:

—Title

—Author and/or editor

—Publisher

—Date of publication

—Intended audience

6. If to be reproduced online, provide specifics

Please note:

Based on the information above, the museum will determine whether a fee will be charged. If the museum provides an estimated fee and the requester accepts, an invoice will be issued.

Not all objects in the New York University Art Collection have high-resolution images available. If the request requires new photography, the museum will provide the requestor with an additional estimated photography fee.

Reproduction rights are granted for only one usage in one publication, one edition, and in one language. Additional language editions and subsequent revised new editions will be considered upon request.

Full documentation and ownership credit, as specified by the museum, must accompany the reproduction. If applicable, photographer’s credit must also be given.

The museum reserves the right to request approval of the printer's proof or mock design.

The publisher is to provide the museum with at least one copy of the publication in which the reproduction appears.
