NYU’s fine arts museum’s intermedia display transforms everyday actions into multisensory explorations of play.

I did not expect to take my shoes off at the Grey Art Museum, and I definitely did not expect to walk barefoot through a pile of beans — but playing it safe doesn’t seem to be Alison Knowles’ approach to art.
Curated by Karen Moss, “by Alison Knowles: A Retrospective (1960–2022),” presented at 18 Cooper Square, offers a hands-on insight into an artist whose work relies on audience immersion. Spanning more than six decades across Knowles’ career, the exhibition brings together around 200 works across performance, printmaking, sound and artist’s books.
