We look forward to seeing you at the Grey! To ensure that your visit is as safe and enjoyable as possible, please follow these visitor guidelines.
Code of Conduct
We are committed to providing a welcoming experience for all. The museum may refuse or revoke admission to individuals who endanger staff, other visitors, or museum property; engage in verbal or physical harassment, discriminatory or threatening behavior; or otherwise interfere with the experience of others.
Prohibited Activities
- Unauthorized playing of music or video, and the use of sound amplification and noisemaker devices (except for assistive-listening devices)
- Extended cell phone conversations in the galleries; voice calls may be held in the hallway leading to the restrooms
- Running, rough play, and other disruptive behavior, including unauthorized performances
- Eating, drinking, and all types of smoking (including electronic cigarettes)
- Use of electrical outlets in the museum
- Solicitation of business and other unauthorized promotional activity
Please note: Children aged 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Prohibited Items
- Food and drink, including water, unless sealed or required for family or medical purposes
- Selfie sticks, tripods, monopods, and professional video equipment
- Animals (except for service animals). We welcome service animals as defined by the ADA. Service animals must be leashed and attended at all times. Emotional support animals, comfort animals, and pets are not permitted.
- Hazardous materials, including weapons, pepper spray, mace, flammable liquids, aerosols, fuels, fireworks, explosives, or any chemical or biological agents considered toxic
Personal Belongings and Security
Visitors are required to leave some belongings—including large backpacks, large bags, and opened food and drink—in lockers, free of charge. Luggage storage is not available. The museum is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
Photography
Non-flash photography and video intended for personal use and recorded on small hand-held devices (cell phones, DSLR cameras) are allowed unless otherwise noted. Some works may be designated as no-photography at the museum’s discretion. Flash photography; the use of selfie sticks, tripods, drones, or other professional video equipment; and unauthorized photoshoots and staged photography are not allowed.
The museum and the University monitor the premises for the safety of the art and the public. Please note that visitors may be photographed, videotaped, or otherwise recorded. By visiting, visitors grant the museum permission to use photographs and/or audiovisual recordings in which visitors appear for archival, documentary, and publicity purposes.
Accessibility
The Grey Art Museum is committed to providing a friendly and accessible environment for all visitors. Our galleries are fully accessible to wheelchair users and visitors who prefer to avoid stairs. For more help navigating the museum, to request specific accommodations, or to inquire about the sensory experience of our current exhibitions, please get in touch with us prior to your visit.
Mobility and Seating
Visitors may use mobility devices, including manual and electric wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and manually powered mobility aids (such as walkers, canes, and crutches) in all areas open to public pedestrian use. Limited seating is available throughout the museum. Wheelchairs (manual and transport), rollators, and portable stools are available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis at the visitor services desk.

Wheelchair-accessible bathrooms are available. Please note doors are manual and do not have push-button entry.
Service Animals
Service animals are welcome, and must be leashed or attended to at all times.
Vision and Audio
Large-print labels for all artworks on view are available upon request at the front desk. Transcripts are available for most artworks with spoken audio components. Closed captions are available for most virtual museum events and online features and resources. If you require live captioning for virtual events, please contact us at least two weeks in advance (subject to availability).

The Grey Art Museum welcomes group visits and offers a meaningful experience for university classes, school groups, and other parties interested in exploring our exhibitions. To help ensure the best possible visit, we ask that all groups of 10 or more register in advance. Whether you're coming for a guided tour or a self-guided visit, advance notice allows us to accommodate your group’s specific needs and uphold a comfortable and safe environment for all visitors.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where are you located?
The Grey Art Museum is located at 18 Cooper Square in the NoHo district of Manhattan. Until 2024, the museum was known as the Grey Art Gallery and was housed within New York University’s Silver Center for Arts and Science along the historic Washington Square Park.
What is the cost of admission?
The museum is free to all NYU students, faculty, and staff. There is a suggested donation of $5 for all other museum visitors.
How do I arrange for a group visit or tour?
Please fill out one of our group visit forms so we know how many people to expect and what specific needs and goals you may have for your visit. All groups of 10 and above are asked to schedule their visit at least two weeks in advance. Group visits are available Tuesday-Friday, 11 am–5 pm. Exceptions are sometimes possible for university and college classes that meet before 11 am.
Does the Grey have public restrooms?
Yes, wheelchair-accessible bathrooms are available. Please note doors are manual and do not have push-button entry.
Is the Grey available for private event rentals?
Unfortunately, the museum is not available for rental.
Can the Museum appraise my artwork or artifacts?
The Grey staff does not authenticate or perform appraisals of works of art or artifacts for the public. We suggest that you consult a certified appraiser or auction house. You may also contact the Appraisers Association of America to get more information on certain types of appraisals.
I’m an artist. Can I send you information about my work?
The Grey Art Museum does not accept unsolicited artist submissions, and we cannot respond to or return unsolicited material.
I have an idea for an exhibition. Can I send it to you?
We are currently not accepting exhibition proposals. Please visit the “Submission Guidelines” page for more information.
Are large bags permitted on-site?
If you arrive carrying a bag or backpack larger than 11 x 14 inches, we will ask you to store it in our lockers—available at the front of the museum—for the duration of your visit.
Is the Grey accessible to people with disabilities?
Yes, the museum is accessible to people with disabilities, including wheelchair users. Please read the Accessibility section on this page and call (212) 998-6780 for more information.
Are mobile devices permitted in the galleries?
You may text during your visit. However, please set your phone to vibrate and take all voice calls outside of the galleries.
Does the Grey have mobility devices for visitor use?

Is filming allowed in the museum?
No. Filming is not allowed inside of the Grey.
I’d like to donate a work of art to the Grey. What should I do?
Given our limited storage, the Grey Art Museum does not actively acquire or accept many works into the NYU Art Collection. Furthermore, donations that are accepted usually complement the strengths of the NYU collections such as Downtown New York or Modern Asian and Middle Eastern Art. To submit art for consideration, supply digital images and basic information about the work (title, artist, year, dimensions, acquisition history) to greyartmuseum@nyu.edu. The Grey cannot advise collectors regarding the value of their artwork nor can the Grey’s staff provide authentication services.
